My first attempt at making short pastry and subsequent quiche went fairly well. I had a too small dish to justify all the pastry and hence it ended up being ODed with pastry. It was a sausage, silverbeet and capsicum quiche in remembrance of Ben C's great masterpieces. I will get there sensei.

Slowly I am working out my cake recipe. I want to chocolate it as much as possible while still retaining moistness. The milk/cocoa balance must be maintained in order to keep the deliciousness equilibrium shown in equation 1.

Equation 1. An equation expressing the dependence of deliciousness upon the variables cocoa and milk, where c is the cocoa constant, m the milk constant and r a constant relating to the inherent tastiness of the recipe.

Tis' the season for parties and since my birthday has just been, its time for another bash. Friday the 3rd of Feb from 7.30pmish it shall be, at the flat I call home. I would love to see you there.

If there is anyone keen to go see Bonnie 'Prince' Billy next week Thursday at 8pm speak now. He looks like an interesting character. It's $40 at Indigo.

A couple of fotos from Hawaii

A typical sunset as seen on Waikiki Beach.

My friend Lisa from Dunedin and I on a catamaran floating away from Waikiki Beach.

In the past two days I have come home to be greeted with treats from distant lands. First my official Elliott Smith t-shirt arrived with the Speed Trials and Needle In The Hay 7" singles, Son of Sam promo cd and XO sticker. Today arrived Belle & Sebastian's new Funny Little Frog single in all three formats: CD, DVD and 7". I guess they are early birthday presents. Happy Birthday me.

After celebrating being the man by zipping between cars on me bike on my way home, my back wheel slipped loose, jamming against the frame at a busy intersection as the light turned green. That'll learn me!

eternal sunshine of a spotless mind

Now that was a good movie. I must treasure the good/happy memories I have of those I love; hold them close so the bad ones just fade away.

Cracked pots

From dust we came
From clay we were formed.
Breathe entered with life
Not once but now twice.

Jars of clay full of light.
Let us crack,
Let us share,
This great light of life.

Back

Since last time I have been to Hawaii and back and have moved on into the ’06. Hawaii was mint. Highlights were a sunset cruise with an open bar, snorkelling with the fishes, hanging with my uni crew, discovering that bologna is actually only luncheon, swimming, rolling and playing in the warm ocean. Lowlights were having my suitcase lost in Sydney and arriving two days latter, learning that Americans haven’t discovered the key to a tasty pizza….sauces, finding that Danishefsky wasn’t present at the conference and not getting to go scootering around the island.

I have decided that in ’06 I want to pick up more domestic skills. So far I have worked on tending my garden and making some mighty fine t sauce (ask for recipe if you dare). Feel free to suggest other skills you think I should master.

National Youth Camp was a mixed affair. Highlights were barn dancing, catching carp, not getting burnt, having good study group to lead and cementing a few friendships. Lowlights were losing a piece from my fishing reel, awkward friend situation, lack of a tight crew to hang with, and allowing music to drag me down further.

What I learnt from camp: I need to get more involved with the welly youth, Elliott ain’t always the answer, an encouraging word can go a long way and that I am getting old fast.
